Advanced Combat: When to attack a healer Empty Advanced Combat: When to attack a healer

Please be sure to have read all 'Basic Combat' topics before considering 'Advanced Combat' topics. New Code Introduced!

When you encounter a battle against Destruction, it seems most logical that the best way to win is to take out the healers first. Now, in most cases this is true. However, you can't just have everyone drop everything and go after their healers first, which I'll call Case 1.

[Case 1] Doing this puts the entire group in a vulnerable position, especially more so the harder it is to get to the healer due to terrain or players and their collision detection. This is because the entire time you're chasing after the healer, the other team is doing nothing but damaging your team down, and in this case, AoE will cause your team to take way more damage than your healers may be able to heal back, all while their healers only have to heal themselves and each other. This also leaves your own healers a lot more vulnerable.

[Case 2] So what do you do? Just fight on the front lines while their healers are free to do their job? NO! Doing that would be worse than Case 1. Assuming that the opposing healers know what they're doing, this can almost never turn out well. Even if you do manage to kill someone, a healer can always resurrect someone. And if you leave their healers to do their job and Destruction decides to attack your healers, chances are that they will win.

[Case 3] So if we can't just charge their healers, and we can't leave them alone, then what are we supposed to do? Exactly what you're probably thinking... Something in between. I've found it most efficient when healers are merely distracted, or attacked by a single or two people (dependent on the situation), while the rest of the team fights according to what's discussed in 'Basic Combat: DPS Tactics.'

So who attacks the healers and who doesn't? This question is hard to give a definite answer, but it's safe to say that the assassination class, Witch Hunter, and sometimes the two Ranged DPS classes, Engineer and Shadow Warrior, are generally preferred classes to attack healers. This is because they are better able to deal a lot of damage to single targets than other classes.

Who and how many to send after enemy healers is usually dependent on how many healers they have. If they have only one healer, it's probably best for two people to attack it, to ensure his death. Two people can take out a healer more than twice as fast as one person, even if both players deal the same amount of damage. This is because the longer the healer is alive, the more prepared he is to heal himself. If one person can successfully distract the healer from being able to heal anyone else and not get killed too quickly, then using one person on the healer is preferred. The situation must be carefully observed to determine this factor. Let me set up a few scenarios and explain what action is best for each one. Each scenario assumes roughly even teams (by body count).

[Scenario 1] If you are a healer-killer and you're approaching the battle and notice that there is only one healer and he's alone and away from his group, then you should call out and claim the healer so that other anti-healers can go help DPS the main front. While you are attacking the healer and keeping him from healing anyone else in his group, your DPS is free to kill as fast as they can do damage (and if your team has heals, then all the better!). If you know you're going to die before the healer dies, call it out on Ventrilo or type "code green" in-game to let the other anti-healers to change motives. In this case, the next person to call it out will attack him.
-------------------------------------

[Scenario 2] In this scenario, the other team has 4 healers. Your team has 4 anti-healer classes. How do you approach this one? This situation is A LOT more complex to triumph. You must assess the situation before you dive into combat blindly. They have 4 healers, so they must be low on offensive power (again, assuming teams are roughly equal in number). How many healers do we have? Do you have one DPS per healer? Two DPS to one healer to attack two at a time? Well to be honest, either of those could work just as well depending on the battle placement. But the key focus on this particular scenario is keeping in mind that it's not likely that all 4 anti-healers will live longer than all 4 healers. In this scenario, you need to have your guns loaded, because this will actually require shared DPS from the main front. As one of the 4 anti-healers dies and calls out "code green," The next-most available DPS class needs to be able to cover up for the loss. Also, in this case, your team better have at least 1 good healer, because your team will be sacrificing their well-being to go from the front line to attacking healers after a Code: green is called. Though their offense is probably weaker than yours, we're sacrificing overall damage potential in order to accomplish a more important goal. If your team does NOT have a healer, then your DPS will have to be smarter than the other team in killing. Refer to 'Basic Combat: Who to attack' for the best way to win this scenario in the parameters I set here.
-------------------------------------

Someone with a lot of knowledge and experience on general combat tactics shouldn't have problem with taking out healers in the most efficient manner. If you've read and understood all of the 'Basic Combat' topics, then you should have no problems deciding what action to take during each battle.
